The Star-Spangled RoosterJun 10, 2009
By A. Dent
"Aragorn"
The rooster or "Le Coq" is one of France's most popular national symbols. So, what do you get when you wrap the Star-Spangled Banner around Le Coq Gaulois (the Gallic Rooster)? You get a Ty Beanie Baby named 'Homeland'. Or a cross-dressing patriotic bird. Handmade in China.
Homeland would have been impossible only a few short years ago, during the days of powder scares, color-coded terror, Freedom Fries and All-American Vanilla but, as we are culturally crossing into an era of increased ambiguity, tiny Homeland just might become one symbol or the apt illustration of a trans-national, absurd, diverse, pluralistic and yet intensely patriotic future.
Current possible uses: a group of cultural exchange students traveling to France or, as a money saver, to be used by someone who plans to celebrate the 4th of July in France and then to rush to the States for France's July 14 national holiday.
I would have awarded 5 stars to Homeland if the white paint from stars on the rooster's pants wasn't chipping away. Sadly, this is not the case. All patriotic Homeland owners on this side of the Atlantic should avoid ever washing or touching Homeland's pants or risk turning him into a fully, unambiguous Gallic Rooster wearing France's 'Drapeau Tricolore'.
